Spain, April 1999

Onto the ferry in Plymouth (449k) This year we decided to tour rather than stay in one place. One of problems with Spain is how far away it is. You can either ride all the way down France or take the ferry to Santander or Bilbao. The ferry takes 24 hours and although it's easier than riding all the way, it takes two days out of your holiday for the round trip. We didn't fancy such a long ride, so we opted for the ferry from Plymouth to Santander. It rained all the way to Plymouth. We spent each of the 5 nights in Spain in a different place and did a large circle round most of the country staying in Salamanca, Cordoba, Alicante and Soria and on the last night, back to Santander ready for the morning ferry.

Nearly There (166k) Final checks before hitting the road (227k) Stopped for Lunch (224k) In the Mountains between Cordoba and Alicante (284k)

In the Mountains between Cordoba and Alicante (239k) A lot of the main cross country roads in Spain are relatively straight, but when you hit a mountain section they are outstanding. The long switchbacks up and down mountains are often wider than the ones in the South of France, allowing you to go faster. I didn't have any particular favorites on this trip, the mountain sections were all excellent and the straighter bits weren't too bad if you kept above a ton.
